ABOUT infra-red thermal imaging

Infra-red thermal imaging, commonly referred to as thermography, is a non-invasive technique that employs infrared radiation to produce images displaying temperature variations.

All objects emit infrared radiation with a temperature above zero degrees Celsius.

A thermal camera with an infra-red detector captures the radiation. The detector converts infra-red radiation into visible images, which use a colour spectrum to differentiate between different temperatures.

Thermography can help detect abnormal heat patterns that indicate equipment failures.

This makes it useful for detecting radiated connections on live electrical installations.

If not attended to, these radiated connections deteriorate at an accelerated pace due to the heat, resulting in catastrophic failures, often with costly consequential damage.

Our Services

At Wescan Thermal, we assist and use Infra-red thermal imaging for various applications, such as:

  • Electrical (distribution boards, cable faults, electrical motors, overhead lines)
  • Refrigeration (cold and freezer rooms)
  • Water leaks
  • Pipe detection
  • Damp retention
  • Insulation brakeage
  • Ultrasonic
  • Solar Panels
  • Environmental impact surveys

Wescan Thermal can also provide in-depth reporting for insurance purposes.

We are ISO9001 certified at the ITC (Infra-red Training Centre Stockholm, Sweeden).

We service clients throughout South Africa and internationally.

why use infra-red cameras

Infra-red cameras give a visual overall view of the target area, making scanning quick and accurate. Always ensure that equipment is running at a reasonable electrical load to obtain accurate reporting results. It is critically important to use the correct repair methodology  to repair possible faults.

Faults are caused by  either a loose connection, oxidized surfaces of the conductor wire strands, or both. In some cases, internal faults in breakers or other equipment can be the cause of faults detected on the equipment. In a few cases, tightening the connection screw will cure a radiated connection. In many cases, however, this methodology will not be effective.

The major advantages of Infra-red Imaging are:

  • It can be performed without stopping your plant or facility
  • It is cost-effective, especially when compared to possible production loss
  • it detects failures before they occur
  • It can be used in most types of equipment and industries
  • May result in lower insurance premiums
